Unique Portrayals (9)
I am a portraiture artist, I like depicting people. I am also interested in absences and negative space and the poetic possibilities of showing a thing by presenting the absence of it. I have never shown my photography before; I have always thought it a bit banal. This work is much more playful than my drawings, which tend to be quite sombre, melancholy and philosophical. This series is also more literal; the photos comprise a document of my movements, the places and the people with whom I have interacted in the past few months. The sunglass portraits are the beginning of a larger project which will gather momentum this year, which I have called Ways of Seeing. Sunglasses are an intimate part of a person’s outward persona; they are chosen for their style and function, but also, they are the objects through which the wearer sees the world. They can also be seen as a ‘shield’ if indeed the eyes are the windows to the soul. The Underseen, Overlooked diptych is in the vein of my Ways of Seeing project. They are photos of pages from my journal, which is also about personal space and documentation. They are also about the mundane and treasuring objects and interactions that people generally tend to take for granted. - -
